"Don't you know you're out of a job?"

My friend Stephen Bryant just published an article about citizen journalism at the Online Journalism Review. He opens with this disenchanting lead:

"Last October I traveled to the Argent Hotel in San Francisco to cover the Web 2.0 conference. As I was jotting down some notes between sessions, a bearded gentleman approached me and asked what I was doing. When I told him, he laughed and said, 'You're a reporter? Don't you know you're out of a job, bitch?'"

That's why were here, trying to figure out how to keep our writing jobs. The market is in pain, and nobody knows what it means. It could be contractions, growing pains, or death throes. Stephen takes a hard look at citizen journalism outfits, looking at the ways small, community-run news experiments are working.
