In the middle of that flurry of writing, I read this great essay by Sara Gran, published by one of The Publishing Spot's literary patron saints, M.J. Rose. Besides the fact that Sara Gran publishes in My Favorite Genre and uses her hilarious blog to keep up with her fans, she reminded me that you can fill up a blog with a month's worth of posts about writing and still have your brain turn to mush. You just gotta write.
Dig it:
"It’s probably true that you write the books you’d like to read. One day I started, just for fun, writing a book I had always wanted to read; a mystery novel as hard-boiled as I could make it, but with two significant restrictions: I wanted a woman in the lead role, and I wanted to make all the characters as real as I could, rather then rely on the conventions of noir, or the conventions of society at large..."
You can say what you will, but Gran woke up the next morning with the first 50-pages her new novel, Dope. In honor of shutting up and writing, today is Sara Gran Day.
