How does your writing sound?

Before I leave you for the weekend, I give you this funny post from Jeff VanderMeer, one of the patron saints of ThePublishingSpot. In this post, Jeff asks readers to tell him how specific creatures sound inside his magical novel world of Ambergris.

"But my question now, for the rest of you out in cyberland, is Does this sound like the gray caps? And if not, what Ambergris sound is it? (I’m sincerely interested, and looking for your honest opinion—your first reaction. Please take a few moments to leave a comment—and, besides, it’s a 13-second sound clip. It won’t take you long at all. And you might be helping with the Shriek movie...)"

While most readers here haven't read City of Saints and Madmen, it's worth listening to the clip on his site and thinking about the problem a little bit. I'm constantly asking myself how my stories sound--how the creatures, words, and images work while floating between me and my readers. This weekend read everything you write out loud. Once you start, you'll never stop...
