
Peter Hessler (China 1996-98) has written for the New Yorker, New York Times, and National Geographic. His first novel, River Town, quickly became one of the most famous Peace Corps memoirs.
Sarah Erdman (Cote d’Ivorie 1998-2000) wrote about her experience in Peace Corps Africa, writing the memoir, Nine Hills to Nambonkaha. Her memoir prompted author Mike Tidwell to write, "I could never be a PCV in a poor African village again. In that way that only parents can understand, it would be like watching my own son die 200 times in two years."
Melanie Sumner (Senegal 1988-90) wrote a series of short stories set in Senegal, a collection called Polite Society. In 1995, she won the Maria Thomas Fiction Award for former Peace Corps volunteers.
