What Should I Do?
Visual by www.PDImages.com B01331.JPG
One brave ThePublishingSpot reader sent in a question this weekend, and I'm more than happy to provide some answers.  If you have problems with web writing too, please drop me a line...

"I would like to write a graphic novel based on characters from one of my favorite video games. But I have two problems, 1), I'm not published, and 2), if I wrote the graphic novel as a fan fiction one I could get in trouble for it.

So what should I do?"

I suggest all aspiring fan-artists spend some time exploring the videogame section of Fanart Central and the game art section at MediaMiner.org too.  The most important thing you can do is seek inspiration and guidance from the fan-art community, where helpful blogs like Comixpedia can help you find readers interested in your new project.

After that, check out my post about legality and fan art.  Those links will help you navigate the tricky copyright laws that affect fan art and fan fiction, and your graphic novel will get off to a good start. Good luck...

Via an off-handed link lodged in Nick Mamatas' virtual battle of wits with Jason Pettus, I just discovered a happy little publishing company. Go check out BenBella Books, a sweet house with a LiveJournal page and an even sweeter... [Read More]

This is very useful for all those interested in reading and writing fanfiction.I would like to add that www.fanfiction.net is also a very good place to read Harry Potter fanfiction. It is a site for fanfiction of all genres and Harry Potter, listed under the book section, happens to be one of the most popular genres. The site has well defined ratings from K to M to distinguish the language and violence content suitable for various age groups as well as fanfiction in different languages and a good searching system to find what one is looking for.
