Over the course of my week-long interview with zine librarian Jenna Freedman, we discussed mothers with zines--an unexpected sub-genre of the zine universe.
I spent some time exploring motherhood zines via the incomparable Motherhood Uncensored blog. "I, a professional woman who had previously swore off any thought of functional reproduction," writes Kristen, the industrious writer behind this popular site.
"[A]m here to bust myths, open eyes, and bring to the light the TRUE realities (both harsh and joyous) of motherhood."
Kristen's website lead me to three interesting zines for mothers, including Fertile Ground Zine. This publication is edited by Stacey, a writer, urban anthropologist and blogging mother living in Tennessee.
The Whole Mom Zine is a group-run, web-published zine about motherhood. The site features active reader forums alongside articles.
Mamazine is another great zine, loaded with thoughtful columns like this essay by Laura Tuley, a mother displaced by the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina.
