Old media wrestles with new media over at Time magazine, when book critic Lev Grossman called for a truce with podcasting reviewer Edward Champion. It's a funny piece, lots of superhero imagery mixed with a grudging respect for the digital reviewer.
Check it out:
"I want to be clear: I don't think Ed Champion is an idiot. I've read some of the other, non--Lev Grossman-related posts on his blog (which is mostly about books), and have found them to be highly opinionated but otherwise cogent and well-informed, and sometimes even charming. Ed Champion is not insane. He's just unswervingly committed to the position that I am a complete tool."
After that, Champion added some corrections and pledged to send a peace offering. It's cheering. We're all just writers trying to make it in a shrinking world, after all.
"And I actually think his article is very fair and reasonable. But I should point out three things: (1) Edward Champion is my real name, (2) Contrary to my criticisms, I don’t think Lev Grossman is a complete tool nor a total chickenhead. (3) I am actually getting paid for my review coverage."
