Tell Me the STORY!

At least once a week, Brian Clark over at Copyblogger writes something I think everybody should read. Today, he's talking about headlines, a crucial part of web writing.

Nowadays, your headline is competing with 10,000 other headline about the same topic. You need to tell the best STORY. Here, Copyblogger picked a headline that tells you the facts about a news item, but it doesn't tell you the STORY.

I'm printing Copyblogger's introduction so you can try and spot the STORY lurking behind that headline. Once you see this example, you'll never make the same mistake again.

"'Former Texas first lady Nellie Connally dead at 87'

"There are a whole lot of people who are interested in the bigger story that Nellie played a part in, but that News 8 headline would have sailed right over their heads.

"So, the AP wisely went with this instead..."
