No matter what you think about experiments like this, web writers have to read Danielewski--he's leading the pack on Internet influenced, interactive fiction.
He's got a brand new book coming out, complete with a website, user-generated footnotes, and a webby community already dedicated to the book. Deborah Vankin just reviewed it for the L.A. Times:
"Whether or not you go for this kind of thing, "Only Revolutions" should be paid attention to, if only because of how it embraces and utilizes new technology and how, in turn, that technology has shaped it.
"Those who take it on as pleasure reading are advised to keep Post-its — and patience — handy. The experience might be worth it. After all, when "On the Road" was published in 1957, Truman Capote infamously called it a "piece of dreck" that was "typing" rather than "writing." It would be easy to make the same mistake regarding html."
Edward Champion had this to add:
"I realize that I’m going to have to read this book several times. Here’s a sample passage from page 101 (Sam’s side): “Calmly I fustigate NURSE BOZARK to react. She doesn’t, filing her toes. fortunately, EXTERNIES race over. Checking for pulse.”
