You've Got To Get Your Name All Over the Place: How To Break Into Tech Journalism
"Every now and then I rouse the Reel Pop staff from their drool-puddling torpor and send them a-mucking in the back alleys of video-sharing sites, places where the glorious light of 'most viewed today' doesn't reach. And then dutifully, like a cat laying a dead mole at its master's feet, they return with their prize."

That's how Steve Bryant rolls over at his web video news site, Reel Pop. He mixes mad metaphors and breaking news, creating a totally new style for a totally new genre of web journalism.

Scan000141.jpgWelcome to the beguiling beginning
of my interview with Steve Bryant, part of my deceptively simple feature: Five Easy Questions. In the spirit of Jack Nicholson’s mad piano player, I run a serialized set of weekly interviews with writing pioneers—delivering some practical, unexpected advice about web publishing.

Jason Boog:
How in the heck did you end up editing at Ziff Davis? If somebody's looking to start as a tech/Internet journalist from the ground up, what do you advise them to do?

Steve Bryant:
I think I applied to work at eWEEK through Mediabistro. Usually Mediabistro has no love for me. I went to the site the other day and it flicked me off.

But being a technology journalist these days has to be easier than ever before. (Hell, if I can do it)

The Internet is all about niche content. It's the inside baseball of everything.

As for Reel Pop, the Hollywood Reporter actually approached me. They saw what I wrote for the Online Journalism Review, I think.

That's another thing, you've got to get your name all over the place.

Ubiquity is the new exclusivity. Amanda Congdon told me that once. She's not unnattractive.
