A Cautionary Tale
Just when I got done telling you not to shove your work blindly into the hands of bloggers you don't read, I discovered a cautionary tale. Over at the message board oDark.com, an unsuspecting writer (or friend of an unsuspecting writer) posted this press release.

Fire and brimstone ensued as hundreds of posters lambasted unsuspecting writer. I've made these mistakes before, and I don't want you to make them too.

No matter how badly you want readers, don't ever self-promote in web communities until they know and trust you. Even then, you probably shouldn't self-promote.

The poster MarySanGiovanni had the most constructive criticism...

"I love how people come here to slather spamishness on our board without any intro, any hello, any buy-us-a-drinkness, and then call US unprofessional. Professionals, of course, recognize both professional publications and professional awards, and will naturally research claims made to either (as Jack has done, it seems). We aren't sure how it benefits you to promote her here with such unabashed enthusiasm, but hey, at the least, she seems like a dedicated writer."

Thanks to Nick Mamatas for the tip. Check out the debut issue of Clarkesworld Magazine that he edited...
