A Legal Story We All Need To Read
Bloggers around the world are debating the publishing struggle that just rocked a fellow web writer. Last Thursday, Heather Armstrong--the legendary blogger fired from her job for blogging a few years ago--settled a nasty lawsuit in court over a bungled book contract.

While we don't focus too much on the legal side of writing here (and I sure as heck don't know how to advise somebody about this sort of thing), it's a story all web writers should pay attention to. There's a big, scary, litigious world out there...

These new developments could technically affect any of us some day, and it's an important cautionary tale. Check out The Blog Herald for the full scoop (including court filings):

"uber-blogger & A-Lister Dooce commented how she had been recently sued over a breach of contract issue.

"A little research has led us to the actual court filings in this matter, which appear to indeed be a breach of contract issue between Kensington Publishing Corporation and Heather Armstrong, aka Dooce."

I understand she's now going to be talking to them - about a book deal?

Considering all the bad blood the publisher's created, right or wrong, they'd be well-advised to treat her with more care. Lots more people are watching and the potential backlash could be brutal.

Sure she's no doubt a pain to deal with - artists almost always are - but eminently worth it, IMHO.

I've been reading her blog since she started it and she routinely touches me emotionally. No small trick for any writer. Anyone that can make connections like that on a regular basis clearly has great talent.

I do feel for her, she has been put on a shooting row, taking a swing at her for something she did because she felt it was the right thing to do. I admire that in a person.

I be afraid she's now going to be message to superego - hereas respects a book compromise?
