Seriously, it's a great post, worth checking out for Champion's interview with nominee Dana Spiotta. As for my personal recommendation, I always tell people to check out Ken Kalfus.
He's an under-read writer, but his fans are a dedicated bunch. His first book of short stories, Thirst, blew my mind back in college. Here's a Salon interview with the man if you want more information.
