I just finished reading this article about cartoonist Garry Trudeau. The creator of Doonesbury has been telling stories about veterans for years now, and his work has recently focused on Iraq.
His site now sponsors a war blog written by soldiers in Iraq, and the cartoonist spends time in veterans' hospitals, trying to ease the physical and psychological trauma of the war. As a storyteller, he uses his comic strip to show this journey.
Read the article, and ask yourself, how do we tell this story?
"'In these soldiers' minds,' Trudeau will explain afterward, 'their whole identity, who they are right now, is what happened to them. They want to tell the story, they want to be asked about it, and you're honoring them by listening. The more they revisit it, the less power it has over them.'"
