Web Ethics 101: Act Accordingly
The toughest part about digital publishing is pretty basic: You know how many readers you have and where they come from, but you never know what they think unless they leave comments.

In his essay, "Web Developers Think You're Stupid," the web writer Tim Baxter explores how Internet anonymity causes web writers to treat their readers carelessly. Don't make these same mistakes:

"Your visitors aren't junkies. They're not just statistics in your log files. They're not anonymous apparitions wandering through your server space. They're thinking, feeling people, and they've done you a great favor by granting you a bit of their time (and maybe their money).

"Show them a little respect."

I noticed the difference over at Newsvine, the reading and blogging community I wrote about yesterday. The site contains profiles, reading histories, and favorite sites of everybody on the site.

Soft_computer_keyboard.jpgWe are the first generation of writers that can actually measure and interact with our readers in real time. We have a great new power. Act accordingly, as Jack Nicholson says in his newest movie (which I enjoyed last night).

Join the conversation. What can we do better for our new-style readers?
