Gordon Hurd, another Brooklyn-based writer, has helped me answer that question. His blog, After the MFA, guides fledgling writers through the realities of our strange profession.
Today, he brought on a guest writer named Armand Inezian to deliver some additional advice. Inezian took a less conventional approach to getting his MFA, and has built a satisfying writing career.
I think everybody should at least consider his advice before jumping into writing school. Check it out:
"MFAs don’t guarantee you work. Here’s a short list of the type of job for which an MFA gives you favored status: teaching creative writing. That’s it. That’s all. If you want to go into publishing, you may as well get an MA in Publishing. Want to teach literature? Then you’re up against PhD’s."
