Blockbuster scribe Michael Crichton's next thriller is about genetics company, and a sneakily-related website has cropped up with videos about creatures created by his fictional scientists-- everything from abnormal puppies and cloned beauties.
Crichton's one of the biggest writers in the world, but fledgling writers should follow his example. It's about time we paying attention to the webby communities over at YouTube. I actively encourage chopping away at the barrier separating fiction and reality.
Chop away, chop away:
"Genes run amok at Nextgencode, which is as it should be. The 'company' is the creation of News Corp.'s HarperCollins Publishers, and its sole purpose is to gin up interest in 'Next,' Michael Crichton's coming thriller about genetic research. The publisher plans to post videos on YouTube and other popular Web sites touting the accomplishments and products of Nextgencode."

ARGs have been doing this for a while. There are some fringe books like Join My Cult, Poker Without Cards, umm...a few graphic novels/comics out there that have been doing this for a few years, too. Joseph Matheny, I think, was one of the first to do this way back when with Ong's Hat.
They've done this for movies and video games for a few years, too.
