Nobody ever says, "I became a writer for the money, I practice law as a hobby."
Still, every year a very, very, very select few writers hit the publishing jackpot. I'm not trying to be one of those writers. I doubt you are either. After all, we both read Chris Eaton today when he said this frank and important piece of advice about publishing:
"As depressing as it sounds, I'm not sure there is often a light at the end of the tunnel.Certainly there are folks who reach the bestsellers list and you easily live off that. And lately there's been a spurt of big advances to first time authors that's pretty mindboggling. But an author's royalties on a book tend to be in the $2 range, so you need to sell a lot of books before you can live off it."
Nevertheless, there is a certain dirty pleasure in reading about the brightest lights at the end of the tunnel, the Forbes' Top Earning Authors list. Here's their photo of the top writer...

Practicing law is a good hobby! Trust me, it's a lot better than doing it to make a living.
