I spend so much time talking about community at this website, but I just found a group of people who are actually doing something about it.
Thanks to Susan Henderson over at LitPark, I discovered a group of writers who built an online group of your friends, sponsored writing contests, and generally supported each other as they finished books.
You need to check it out and read these people. They aren't doing fancy HTML or relying on gimmicks. They built a supportive web community, plain and simple.
The collective was founded by Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Hillary Carlip and Maria Dahvana Headley and Danielle Trussoni.
But don't take my word for it. Check it out:
"The Memorists Collective is a group of four established, recently published memoirists who met online through MySpace, and have banded together to start a revolution in the world of book promotion, through collaboration instead of competition...They're also on a mission to help other writers find success, readers, and publishers, and sponsor contests to do so."
