How To Buy Your Domain Name

"I don't think most people, first starting out working with the web directly, understand the implications of selecting the name for where to place their work...Thinking through a bit on what you want for your site and its name will pay big dividends later," Scot Herrick advises all domain-name seeking authors.

So you finally decided to hang up your old freely hosted website over at  www.johndoeisagreatwriter.bloghoo.googpress.com.net. After you carefully consider different domain names, you are ready to buy something simpler like www.johndoe.com. How do you do it?

I'm not here to endorse specific brand names, but I'll tell you how I did it. My personal webpage (jasonboog.com) runs on the WordPress blog engine. They did all the set-up work for me, offering plenty of design options with easy controls. If you have a favorite blog company, chip in the web address in the comments section.

As for picking a place to keep my webpage, I used WordPress' and long, detailed list of hosting companies where you can register your domain name and build your digital home.

Check it out...

"There are hundreds of thousands of web hosts out there, the vast majority of which meet the WordPress minimum requirements ... We've dealt with more hosts than you can imagine; in our opinion, the hosts below represent some of the best and brightest of the hosting world."

I think there are two distinct steps in domain name picking:

One, determine which company you want to manage your domain. It might not be the same company who hosts your domain. These companies can help you determine if a domain name is available.

For example, Network Solutions will manage your name and host your web site. I chose to have Network Solutions manage my domain name. But not host my site.

Two, determine who you want to host your domain. I chose Yahoo! Small Business to host my sites for a variety of reasons. But, I've had others host my domain. And Yahoo! does not manage my domain name.

You can be successful having one company host and manage your domain, of course. But just understand that they are two separate decisions.

Scot

Yes,these are two different things and before making any decision one must think about these two points because afterwards alot of things depend on this decision, you can not push things into people's mind so be careful while choosing the domain because it sometimes help in advertising.
