I am less than 24-hours away from my first trip outside of the United States in four years. Why should I bring this up on a writing website?
Because, for writers, a little bit of traveling goes a long way. When I'm traveling, I write double-time, trying to cram in every strange image, kooky story, and beautiful thing I see. A good trip can give you enough material for a novel.
That's why I got excited about my friend's new website, Retired Expats. It's a non-exclusive club for writers and other travelers living in New York, and every week they plan a new trip to visit a different immigrant community in New York.
Think about traveling, inside or outside your country. It will change your stories forever...
"Manhattan is cool, but it's not uniquely NYC. Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx make this city a global rarity, and it's foolish not to seize that defining characteristic. We are typical expats: curious, adventurous and bored by comfort. We'd rather go out and explore, even if it sucks, than not know what's out there. Come along to reckless parties in Brighton Beach, Latino discotheques in Sunnyside, and Brazilian Samba in Astoria."
