Our favorite anonymous agent blogger, Miss Snark, has just released some crazy statistics. She recorded how many submissions she receives every month, and compared those numbers against the few, talented folks who actually win her undivided attention.
Think about these numbers over the weekend. It will put the long, lonely road towards publication in perspective, and remind you of the combination of luck, skill, and patience required to get published. Most importantly, it will give you an idea of the process an agent goes through while you are waiting anxiously beside your mailbox.
"I don't request full [manuscripts] from anyone who hasn't shown a pretty significant demonstration of talent in those first 50 pages. However here's a waterfall of reality for you to bathe in: "[I receive] 100 queries a week (x 12 weeks per quarter), 5 partials requested each week, 20 partials a month (x 3 months), 5 fulls requested a month (x 3 months), [and] 1 new client quarter (in three months)."
If you aren't to depressed, jump into Miss Snark's one-day writing contest.
