I love writing with music. I love wandering around New York City with my personal soundtrack playing in my head. For me, storytelling and music are wrapped up together.
Today I'm listing my favorite, inspirational music videos for writers--chosen for musical content, video storytelling, and for the way they stuck in my brain for years and years. If I'm looking for a little inspiration, these are the videos I go to for help.
The order is arbitrary, and feel free to add your own favorites in the comments...
1. Sabotage -- Beastie Boys
Ever since I was a kid, I've played private detective in my head, running, leaping, and dodging imaginary bullets. This wonderful video will turn you into a secret agent all over again.
2. Sigur Rós' "Glósóli," a spooky, innocent, and at times, creepy, video that tracks a truly epic song. The ending makes me feel this complicated, heady mix of wonder and sadness.
3. Radiohead -- "No Surprises"
One of the best headphone walking songs in the whole world translated into a gut-punch of a music video. I never get tired of telling my friends the story of this video.
4- Peter Gabriel -- In Your Eyes
Not technically a music video, but this scene from Say Anything launched a thousand music-obsessed storytellers.5. Fatboy Slim -- Weapon of Choice
Easily the most overwhelming music video ever made. It will tickle your brain and help you float towards your next novel.

Now, whenever I see you, I'm going to be thinking super-detective, too!
Lance and I have been talking about music and writing back and forth on our blogs for days. It's almost like the characters are telling us what songs to play.
