I spend so much time exploring creative ways to build new community on the web, but today I realized that most web writers already have a community that they overlook--your friends on social networking sites.
Short story writer Elizabeth Crane (who wrote the book When the Messenger is Hot) has just immortalized her MySpace friends in poetry--a model we can follow on Facebook, Friendster, Newsvine, and all our favorite networking sites.
According to Jeffrey Yamaguchi, Crane felt uncertain about how to negotiate this new social scene where friends, graphics, music, tastes, and cheesy HTML collide. It's such a gorgeous idea, paying tribute to your friends and pounding out some new material at the same time.
Why waste all your time making silly comments in MySpace when you could be turning your MySpace friends into art? Check it out:
"You can read more about it here. I meant to write about this a while back... and then a few days ago in my Myspace comments section, lo and behold, I got a haiku from Elizabeth... It was such a wonderful treat."
