Are you inside or outside the "literary establishment?" Does it matter?
The debate has raged on the web the last few weeks. Matthew Cheney recently criticized conspiracy theorists who feel like science fiction writers are excluded from the literary establishment generating tons of comments and links on other blogs. Check out this zinger:
"Readers [of sci-fi] love to think that they're part of a special, marginalized club, but the marginalization comes as much from within their own martyr complexes as any real-world action."
What happens when you mix Axl Rose impersonators, private detectives, and a series of great writers? The soon-to-be launched literary magazine, Please Don't will answer that question in "a collaborative serialized novel," written by Pete Coco (the Misfits-loving guy pictured above), Scott Stealey and other writers. I dig this pulp fiction strategy. (Thanks to Pete Lit for the link.)
Sarah Weinman discovered a post linking to a set of book covers that bear some STRIKING similarities. Brush up on your Photoshop and avoid this kind of (witting or unwitting) imitation!: "Reading The Rap Sheet's latest post doesn't quite make me want to slit my wrists in protest, but you kind of have to wonder if just a leetle bit of due diligence on the production design team at the publishing house's part would have helped a tad."
