Yesterday, journalist Christopher Hitchens told us to quit our dayjobs. Today, writing guru Erika Dreifus is teaching us how to find freelance work once we strike out on our own.
Besides having a great website (which linked to us today--hello fellow Dreifus fans!), this writing coach also wrote The Practicing Writer's Guide to No-Cost Literary Contests and Competitions with hundreds of places where writers can try and pay the bills.
For the fledgling fiction writers in the audience, she also maintains The Practicing Writer's Directory of Paying Short Story Markets, keeping track of the ever-changing short story market.
How do I know all this? Well, I interviewed her, way back at the beginning of this blog. If you want to read what she taught me, just follow these links.
First, Dreifus taught us how to build an online community of readers.
Next, she discussed that all-important topic--should you go to a creative writing MFA program?
Thirdly, she weighed the pros and cons of self-publishing.
Then, she explored the best paying markets for writers.
We concluded with a look at her favorite websites for writers.

Thanks so much for the kind post, Jason. Just so you and your readers know: I've discontinued the paying short story markets guide, because it's fairly easy to access comprehensive and frequently updated information on the subject online at no cost (specifically, at Duotrope.com). BUT I am still compiling guides for paying markets for book reviewers and essayists, and your readers will find them at http://www.lulu.com/erika-dreifus. Thanks again!
